Ecology, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Kilnfield House, Foundry Business Park

Client: Govey Homes Limited.

Description:  Conversion and extension of an existing urban building into 14 residential flats with enhanced landscaping.

HCUK Group involvement: Preliminary Ecological Assessment (PEA), Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment.

Summary

The Site was located in a highly urbanised setting, featured habitats of low biodiversity value, such as hardstanding, a single building, scattered trees, and ephemeral vegetation. Surrounded by commercial properties and a nearby railway line, the site posed challenges typical of urban ecological development.

Our team prepared a comprehensive EcIA and BNG Statement to support the planning application. Key considerations included ensuring compliance with legislation, minimising ecological impacts, and delivering biodiversity enhancements. Assessments identified low potential for protected species, such as nesting birds and foraging and commuting bats.

As part of proposed development, biodiversity was enhanced via the installation of swift and bat boxes, alongside habitat creation including hedgerows, trees, and grassland areas. Using the Defra Biodiversity Metric Tool, we demonstrated the project’s achievement of the mandatory 10% Biodiversity Net Gain. Additionally, a Landscape and Environmental Management Plan will secure the long-term sustainability of these enhancements.

This project highlights our ability to balance urban development with ecological responsibility, achieving measurable biodiversity improvements while ensuring compliance with national legislation and local policies.
