Market Square, Basildon New Town, Essex

HCUK Group is please to have been involved with this project, which gained consent in February 2021. We provided both archaeological and heritage services to support an application for the redevelopment of the Market Square site. It is the largest single development for the Basildon since the New Town was designed at the end of the 1940s. The existing building on the Site was constructed in 1958 and was the first of the shopping areas within the New Town to be built. It included a large mosaic by Geoffrey Clarke, which will be retained as part of the new scheme. Civic art plays an important role with Basildon New Town and the retention of this substantial piece of work ensures that important relationship is preserved.

The proposals will see the regeneration and transformation of the area to better serve the local community and includes the provision of 450,000sqft of mixed use space, providing 492 Built to Rent homes, retail at ground floor for local and independent shops, as well as a community health facility and plenty of amenity space.

HCUK Group produced an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment, Initial Heritage Advice, a full Heritage Impact Assessment and contributed to the Environmental Impact Assessment (in the form of an ES Chapter).
